Introduction

Final year engineering students, in making the transition from university to the workplace or to further study, need to make sense of the learning they have gained throughout their engineering studies. In engineering, the Environmental Engineering Research Project is the vehicle for students to synthesize their learning across their engineering studies and demonstrate their development of graduate attributes. The Environmental Engineering Research Project is structured as two consecutive, linked, semester-long units - Environmental Engineering Research Project 1 and Environmental Engineering Research Project 2. This unit, Environmental Engineering Research Project 1, is the first of the two. The project’s environmental engineering problem must be consistent across the two units. The Environmental Engineering Research Project requires students to identify, plan, research, complete and communicate their solution to a significant environmental engineering problem with some independence. Students need to show initiative and work independently on their project.

This unit supports students’ project and research skills in four ways:
  1. Through regular recorded contact with the student’s academic supervisor.
  2. By providing instruction in research methods, expectations and communications skills.
  3. Access to Faculty staff and resources, and, if applicable, assistance from staff with industry liaisons.
  4. Completing progress reporting e.g. reflective journal entries.
The project is individual, although it may form part of a larger project in collaboration with others. The Environmental Engineering Research Project 1 and 2 outcomes are presented as a major report (minor thesis) and a formal oral presentation. Together, the report and presentation allow the students to demonstrate how they have applied the engineering knowledge and capabilities they have learned, as well as generic skills.

  • 3 develop a project management plan that outlines objectives, activities, resources, timeline and risk assessment to demonstrate self-discipline, self-management skills, personal responsibility and the ability to set learning and achievement goals, GC1, GC4, GC6
  • 4 reflect upon and critically review project work and apply advanced communication skills to convey progress, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC6
