Introduction

This unit provides a broad introduction to the application of management principles to engineering projects and operations. We introduce key skills and knowledge needed when joining the workforce as a practicing engineer, when working in an engineering team, and in the role of engineering manager or project manager. We explore how engineering organisations operate and the management of people and teams within such an organisation. The unit covers the key tools of project management, including planning, estimating, scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation. A strong emphasis is given to the development of management and team skills, while working in an engineering-intensive context. An introduction is also provided to some selected topics, such as strategic planning, contracts, operations, and supply chain management.

In line with current research and university values, this unit strives to achieve a positive and inclusive educational environment. This supports improved academic performance, and increased confidence, and creates a greater sense of safety and belonging. Your teaching team is committed to providing a safe and inclusive learning experience and requires students to take reasonable and appropriate measures to actively eliminate discrimination based on ability; cultural and social background; and diverse sex, sexuality, and gender.
