Introduction
Final year engineering students, in making the transition from university to the workplace or to further study, need to make sense of the learning they have gained throughout their engineering studies. In engineering, the Environmental Engineering Research Project is the vehicle for students to synthesize their learning across their engineering studies and demonstrate their development of graduate attributes. The Environmental Engineering Research Project is structured as two consecutive, linked, semester-long units - Environmental Engineering Research Project 1 and Environmental Engineering Research Project 2. This unit, Environmental Engineering Research Project 1, is the first of the two. The project’s environmental engineering problem must be consistent across the two units. The Environmental Engineering Research Project requires students to identify, plan, research, complete and communicate their solution to a significant environmental engineering problem with some independence. Students need to show initiative and work independently on their project. This unit supports students’ project and research skills in four ways:- Through regular recorded contact with the student’s academic supervisor.
- By providing instruction in research methods, expectations and communications skills.
- Access to Faculty staff and resources, and, if applicable, assistance from staff with industry liaisons.
- Completing progress reporting e.g. reflective journal entries.
Lecture
1 x 2 Hours Weekly
Individual Study
1 x 8 Hours Weekly
Unit Learning Outcomes
- 1 identify, plan and commence a project that leads to the solution of an authentic environmental engineering problem, GC1, GC2, GC4, GC6
- 2 deploy an appropriate combination of knowledge, research, analytical methods, cross-disciplinary learning skills, and creativity to conceive, design, and develop solutions to complex engineering problems with intellectual independence, GC1, GC2, GC4, GC6
- 3 develop a project management plan that outlines objectives, activities, resources, timeline and risk assessment to demonstrate self-discipline, self-management skills, personal responsibility and the ability to set learning and achievement goals, GC1, GC4, GC6
- 4 reflect upon and critically review project work and apply advanced communication skills to convey progress, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC6
Course Learning Outcomes
- 2 Solve complex environmental engineering problems of industrial and societal significance through the application of discipline-specific and integrated bodies of knowledge, design and sustainability principles
- 4 Apply systems thinking for innovative solutions to global environmental engineering challenges, discern knowledge and undertake applied research in a discipline of environmental engineering
- 6 Demonstrate lifelong learning habits, teamwork and leadership abilities, project management skills, and the ability to identify opportunities for career-wide professional growth, necessary for advancing a career in engineering and beyond
Assessment Breakdown
Recent Unit Changes & Response to Student Feedback
Students are encouraged to provide feedback through student surveys (such as Insight and the annual Student Experience Survey) and interactions with teaching staff. Listed below are some recent changes to the unit as a result of student feedback. The Milestones & Reflections submission has been further refined to offer a better structured, timed and scaffolded approach to guide you towards a better project completion
