Introduction

Hydraulics and Hydrology are core disciplines within water engineering, essential for addressing practical challenges in civil and environmental systems. This third-year unit builds on foundational knowledge from fluid mechanics, engineering mathematics, and environmental systems to develop students' ability to analyse and assess hydraulic and hydrological systems. It focuses on two main areas: Hydraulics, which includes the study of hydraulic pumps and open channel flow; and Hydrology, which examines both surface water and groundwater behaviour.

The unit is structured to progressively build technical understanding and critical thinking skills, starting with core theoretical principles and advancing to practical engineering applications. Real-world examples, design tasks, and hands-on activities are integrated throughout the unit to deepen conceptual understanding and reinforce practical relevance.

Whether students aim to specialise in water resources or contribute more broadly within civil engineering, this unit provides essential competencies in modelling, assessment, and problem solving for water-related systems.

  • 3 evaluate and effectively communicate the performance of hydraulic systems in Water Resources Engineering, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6
