Introduction
This unit will develop an understanding of solid and hazardous wastes generated from residential areas, commercial areas, industrial areas, construction sites, and other sources associated with an integrated waste management system. Solid and hazardous waste management involves the participation of decision-makers, policymakers, and professionals. It is important to implement proper and systematic waste management through suitable techniques, technologies, and programmes. Improper handling of solid and hazardous wastes may lead to environmental degradation, which in turn affects human health. Relevant Malaysian legislation will be introduced in this unit to enhance understanding of effective waste management practices. Overall, the unit aims to build a comprehensive understanding of integrated waste management in alignment with legislative requirements.

Unit Learning Outcomes
- 1 identify and discuss the public health, regulatory, planning, technical, and economic principles that influence the solid waste management system, GC1, GC3, GC4, GC6
- 2 describe appropriate methods to minimise the impact to public health from solid waste related activities, GC1, GC2, Gc4, GC6
- 3 analyse the components of an integrated solid waste handling system - including source reduction, recycling and reuse, composing, landfilling and combustion, GC1, GC2, GC3, GC6

- 2 Solve complex environmental engineering problems of industrial and societal significance through the application of discipline-specific and integrated bodies of knowledge, design and sustainability principles
- 3 Make decisions related to the design and implementation of solutions to engineering problems in a safe, ethical, and climate-responsible manner adhering to legal and professional standards and through respectful partnerships with local First Peoples and other diverse cultures as globally responsible citizens
